Mission Statement and Goals

Every year, 1.3 million people die and 50 million more are seriously injured on the world’s roads.  The TRB Global Road Safety Subcommittee provides a forum to share knowledge and resources about road safety in an effort to contribute to the reduction of road deaths and injuries worldwide.

The TRB Global Road Safety Subcommittee, under parent ANB 10 Traffic Safety Management Committee, was formed and first convened at the TRB Annual Meeting in the first year of the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011-2020).  This declaration marks the first time the UN has made road safety an international priority on the scale of HIV/AIDS, malaria, genocide, and natural disasters.

The purpose of the subcommittee is to increase collaboration and knowledge sharing among diverse entities with the common interest of preventing deaths and injuries on the world’s roads.

Its members are multidisciplinary in expertise and diverse in association.  While traditionally, it has been more common practice for high-income countries to share knowledge with lower-income countries, this Subcommittee recognizes that every country has strengths to share with others and weaknesses to improve upon in road safety.  In short, the Subcommittee’s mission is to:

- To share knowledge and resources in road safety

- To reduce duplication of effort in road safety

- To contribute substantively to road safety research on a global scale, especially in areas where gaps remain.
